Music Review: Cowboy Junkies head east By SCOTT BAUER, Associated Press Writer Scott Bauer, Associated Press Writer – Tue Jun 15, 3:24 pm ET Cowboy Junkies, "Renmin Park" (Latent Recordings) Cowboy Junkies head east with "Renmin Park," an inspired collection of songs that seamlessly mixes street sounds and other influences from band member Michael Timmins' three-month trip to China. The distinctive Cowboy Junkies' feel, thanks largely to Margo Timmins lead vocals, still dominates. But listeners can feel the band stretching itself with the inclusion of cover songs by two Chinese artists, Xu Wei and Zuoxiao Zuzhou, who also contributes vocals on one track. It was Michael Timmins' trip to the Chinese city of Jingjiang in late 2008 that inspired "Renmin Park," which refers to places at the center of Chinese cities where music is played and other social events are held. Unlike other artists who may allow the influences of other musical genres to overcome their own sound, Cowboy Junkies stay true to the format that has carried their career for more than two decades while at the same time opening it up to new influences. It's a brave and well-executed start to a series of four new releases the band promises over the next 18 months under the collective title of "The Nomad Series." CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "Stranger Here," is a catchy and rhythmically upbeat tune, something that is sometimes lacking in the usually more mellow offerings of Cowboy Junkies. It's a welcome break from the norm, just as is all of "Renmin Park."
